RIGS

Here are pictures of most of the rigs I've ever owned. See how many you recognise!

I reckon this makes me an Old Timer!!

Marconi CR100/8 Receiver

The first receiver I ever owned. (I was loaned an HRO by Doug G3VMI to get me started, but soon bought this).OK on 80m, 40m and 20m, but deaf as a post above that. Ran it with 40ft of wire and heard loads! I sold it in 1980, but bought another one for old time's sake in 2004.

Yaesu FRG-7 Receiver

I bought this to keep me in touch with HF whilst I had my G8 call - which at that time meant VHF operation only. Not the best receiver ever, but perfectly adequate for everyday use.

Hudson FM 208 VHF Transmitter modified for 144MHz FM

This rig cost me £7.50! (Plus the 12v lead acid battery to run it) I used it in conjunction with the CR100 and a Microwave Modules 2m converter. Single channel, crystal controlled, I modified it to get four channels. S0, S20, S22 & R6.

Pye F27 Base Station

In it's own 19" cabinet this looked very smart. Originally on AM, I modified it for FM. Crystal controlled. I modified it to give six channels on 2m.

Yaesu FT 221R 144MHz Multimode Transceiver

I had a ball with this rig! Despite all the bad press it received, I worked all over Europe and Scandinavia on CW and SSB with 10w. I eventually got my 144MHz Squares Award thanks to this rig. It ran into a 4 ele cubical quad up on the chimney stack.

FDK Multi 11 144MHz FM mobile Transceiver

A very useful little rig for in the car.Crystal controlled, but could scan four channels!

Icom IC-2E 144MHz FM Handie Talkie

I bought this to take to Canada with me in 1980. Worked loads of people with it whilst there and made many friends. When I got back to England I swapped it for the Yaesu separates shown below - owned by Fred, G4BWP.

Yaesu FR 100B HF Receiver

Yaesu FL 200B HF Transmitter

I still have these rigs, although the transmitter is u/s at the moment. Fred, G4BWP, worked the world with them, and I did quite well in my early days. When I got back into the hobby I tried using them, but gave up in favour of the TS530.

Yaesu FT 227R 144MHz FM Transceiver

This rig was in the car for years, and did sterling service. 10w of FM with one memory channel.

Trio TS 530s HF Multimode Transceiver

I bought this secondhand when I got back into the hobby in 2002. Wish I still had it! Worked All Continents, and most of my DXCC with this rig. Hybrid with a pair of 6146s in the final, I'd still recommend this rig to anyone.

Yaesu FT 290r Mk1 144MHz Multimode Transceiver

Bought this in 2003 to get me mobile, and for the Backpacker contests, although I quickly upgraded to the FT817.

Yaesu FT 817 Multimode MultiBand Transceiver

An absolutely superb piece of kit! Won some Backpacker contests with this, and used it for SOTA, as well as daily use in the car on 2m and 70cm. Had great fun on HF portable with this and a Miracle Whip. Swapped it for the FT897D as 5w mobile really isn't enough, then got another one for SOTA work in 2008.

Kenwood TM-D700E 144/430MHz FM Transceiver

I won this in a Radio Communication Foundation raffle! A nice rig, especially if you do data or APRS (Which I don't). I swapped it after a few months for the FT897D.

Yaesu FT 897D HF/VHF/UHF All Mode Transceiver

Apart from having slightly muffled audio on FM receive, this is a superb rig. Swapped it out for another FT 817 in 2008.

Kenwood TS690s HF/6m All Mode Transceiver

My current HF / 6m rig. Has some good features, but I'm not convinced I'm getting 100w out, even though it says that I am. Doesn't seem to perform as well as the TS530s, but maybe the receiver is better, and it's just that I'm hearing more than I can work at times.

Yaesu VX-7R 50/144/432MHz FM Transceiver

I bought this for SOTA, and to give me a little up to date handheld in the shack. Love it so far!

Icom IC 2725 VHF/UHF FM Transceiver

My latest mobile rig. I bought it from Bob, G1SAA, and so far it works very well.
